What is this about?

While there's a lull in hostilities between the Free Cities and Thorne (mid september 2024), Cid has started up a Summoned-led jobs program for the younger* miners at the Farhill Mining Camp.

The idea is that the kids will be apprenticed to people with transferable practical skills (tailoring, engineering, hunting, etc) in the hopes of giving them the means to secure a better future for themselves and, of course, get them out of the mines. While child labor is Bad the hope is that this will give them a few other, less dangerous options.

*Your character can decide to apprentice adult miners if you prefer; Cid's not going to stop anyone.

What does my character need to do? Who can be involved?

If your character can afford to pay the day's wages and has a practical skill that they're willing to teach, they can take on a child apprentice from the mining camp. Cid will facilitate connecting the kids to people who have skills they're interested in and vice versa.

If your character can't afford to take on an apprentice, or if they don't have skills they might want to teach, they can partner up with another Summoned or reach out to a local business.

If you'd like them to participate but think your character needs some convincing, or aren't sure how to approach it, just leave a comment here and I'm happy to help hash things out!

Otherwise, feel free to use this as much or as little as you want for CR or thread starters or whatever... make up your own NPCs etc. Keep your characters' financial means in mind obviously - they can only take on as many apprentices as they can pay for full time work - but otherwise I'm not going to fuss about the details.

The only real requirement is letting me know that the character wants to be involved somehow so that I can keep track!

What sort of effect can I expect this to have?

From the mods:

The Free Cities has no shortage of orphans and those down on their luck who're in need of a job, so replacements won't be hard to find. Some mining overseers might be unhappy about their workers leaving, but it's unlikely they'll be pushed to action and will simply bring in new workers, including children.

One potential effect is that there will steadily be fewer street orphans and crowding in orphanages may be lessened. This is because those orphans are now working at them mines to replace any who have left. Although this might not be the ideal outcome for some of the Summoned, it does mean those children are now receiving housing and payment as opposed to relying on the generosity of others or stealing.

FAQ

What if my character is against child labor? Put those kids in a school!!

The children are for child labor. :( They have families (and themselves) to feed. We're getting them out of the mines first, it's a process. (Feel free to pursue public schools for your own plotting ofc!)

What if my character wants to teach the children crime?

The children can learn crime for free, but not as a part of the program.
